Whether the Wacky Rig is really an independent finesse rig, we will leave open at this point. Ultimately, the only thing responsible for the name is the type of baiting in the so-called “wacky style”. In this case, wacky means that the rubber bait is attached to the hook in a “crazy” way, which fundamentally changes the running behavior compared to normal baiting.
Accessories for the wacky rig
Similar to the Neko rig, the list of accessories for the Wacky Rig can be continued ad infinitum. However, in order not to make the assembly more complicated than it actually is, we will limit ourselves to the two main Wacky Rig variants “weightless” and “weighted” in these instructions. In other words, the weighted and the unweighted Wacky Rig.
Accessories for the weightless wacky rig
The weightless wacky rig is usually fished in shallow water areas without current or is used when the rubber bait used has the buoyancy property “sinking”. The following materials are required for this:
Wacky Rig single hook (without weight)
rubber bait
Fluorocarbon line
Accessories for the weighted wacky rig
If no sinking soft baits are available or the Wacky Rig is fished in deeper sections of water, the weighted Wacky Rig is used. The following materials are required for this:
Wacky jig or single hook
Tungsten nail sinker (optional)
soft bait
Fluorocarbon line
Accessories for the weighted wacky rig
If no sinking soft baits are available or the wacky rig is fished in deeper water sections, the weighted wacky rig is used. The following materials are required for this:
Wacky jig or single hook
Tungsten nail sinker (optional)
rubber bait
Fluorocarbon line
Assembly instructions for the Wacky Rig
Thanks to the “mass” of accessories, the Wacky Rig is particularly quick and easy to assemble. The hooks have an extra wide bend, which is perfect for mounting on rubber worms. Wacky Rig worms are relatively easy to recognize by a thickening, usually in the middle. This is where the hook is pierced, a nail sinker may be sunk into the bait and the hook is connected to the fluorocarbon line.
Assembly instructions for the Weightless Wacky Rig
Pierce the Wacky Rig hook as desired at a central point on the lure, connect the hook to the fluorocarbon leader and the weightless Wacky Rig is ready.
Assembly instructions for the Weighted Wacky Rig
Pierce the Wacky Rig hook or the weighted Wacky Jig approximately in the middle of the rubber bait and, if necessary, insert a Tungsten Nail Sinker in a sufficiently thick part of the bait. Attach fluorocarbon line and the Weighted Wacky Rig is ready.
